The Story of Stuff

Introduction

There is a need to have a supportable production and consumption. Basically, all materials flowing through the materials economy goes through the following steps: extraction, production, distribution, consumption and lastly disposal and seemingly the system is in crisis. During these processes, the system interacts with the real world and is always bumping against limits in all the stages (Leonard, 2012).

Extraction

Extraction is the exploitation of natural resources. During extraction, people use water, cut trees, extract minerals, wipe out animals and thus exploit natural resources. The planet is running out resources because of over using the resources. One third of the natural resources have already been consumed and this weakens the planet’s ability to support. For example, US has less than 4% of the original forest and uses more than its share of natural resources and responds to this by using natural resources from the third world countries, exhausting natural resources further earth. Basically, 80% of planet’s original forest has been useless where in Amazon forest, 2000 tress are cut a minutes. Since people do not own resources, do not have their own means of production, and do not adequately buy the resources and if one does not won or buy, they do not own the stuff (Leonard, 2012).

Production

Energy is used to mix toxic chemicals with natural resources to make toxic contaminated products. The operation of the production system is simply: Toxins in, toxins out. People keep putting toxins in the industrial production systems and thus constantly putting chemicals in the environment, homes, schools, bodies, etc.  Toxins accumulate through the food chain and concentrate in human bodies. Factory workers bear the most effects of the production toxins where they are exposed to toxins and carcinogens. Basically, through the production process, resources and people get wasted where toxins leave factories as products and a lot of toxins leave the factory as by-products causing pollution (Leonard, 2012)

Distribution

Here, distribution involves selling the contaminated products as fast as possible. The goal here is to keep prices low, keep people buying and keeps the record moving. The prices are kept low through externalizing the true costs: where the real cost of making the products is not captured in the price of the product (Marashi, 2011). For instance, the store workers are paid ordinary and there is no health insurance for them.  People end up not paying for the products they buy and this is normally covered by people paying with the loss of their natural resource base, loss of clean air and such (Leonard, 2012).

Constriction/Use

We have a nation of consumers. The primary value of an individual is measured by how much one buys and consumes the products. Consumption rate has risen drastically where an average person consumes twice as much as compared to 50 years ago. The system is producing more consumer goods and the strategies used to influence people to buy goods include:

  • Planned obsolescence: This where goods are designed to become useless very fast for people to buy them again
  • Perceived obsolescence: This is where people are convinced to get rid of perfectly useful products through changing the appearance of the same products such that if one bought the product years ago, it is noticeable that the person has not contributed to consumption and this is how value is measured (Jahan, 2011).

Disposal

Consumed materials are disposed into garbage and this pollutes the air, water, and also has negative climatic changes. Disposal can be through incineration or through landfills. Incineration which a common method of disposal releases toxins to the air and even creates new toxins. However, recycling helps in reducing garbage, and reducing mining and harvesting of natural resources. Nonetheless, recycling is not enough because there is a lot of waste since some products cannot be recycled because some products have too many toxins while others are not designed to be recycled (Leonard, 2012).

Consumerism in UAE

Consumerism is widespread in UAE, where there is conspicuous consumption and this has a likelihood of damaging the economy and hindering the UAE’s efforts of becoming self-reliant. Consumer spending in UAE is has increased gradually over the last past years. The increase of consumer spending instead of saving and investing will continue adversely affecting the local economy (Al-Awsat, 2008). The high consumption rate in UAE can greatly hinder any plans of transforming the country from being a consuming to a producing nation. In UAE, there is a wide range of products, and consumers shopping rate is extremely high (Northrup, 2012).

Conclusion

The system is in a crisis and deserves transformation so that natural resources and people do not get wasted and this can be done through saving the forests, cleaning the producing process, recycling consumed products and such. There is a need to focus on sustainability, equity, renewable energy, green chemistry, local living economies, zero waste, and having a closed loop production.

essay #1

Recycling

One thing that humankind is very adept at making is garbage, especially today with the amount of disposable goods that are on the market. Recycling is a process that allows for materials that seem to no longer have a use be reused to prevent waste from filling up a landfill ( Recycling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia). This may be by melting down the item to create a new item, repurposing the item to be recycled into something new, or reusing the item for its original purpose.

Recycling may seem to be something that was recently invented with the green movement, but that is not actually the case. “In fact, the scrap recycling industry estimates that people were reusing metal scrap as far back as 3000 B.C. or so, while the reuse of wastepaper and textiles goes back about half that far” (Carless, J. 1992 Taking Out the Trash Page 27). This means that pinpointing the exact inventor or person that discovered recycling would be hard to do overall. In the past, many items were not like the good made today that are intended to last for only a short time and need to be repurchased again. Items were made to last, but if something were broken, it would be repaired or repurposed. For example, a frying pan could have the dents removed by hammering them out, and a ripped dress could be ripped up further into cleaning rags. Many times these individuals would recycle without even realizing that they are participating in the concept of recycling because goods were not as readily available as today. It was just acting to extend the life of the product to remain usefulness for the individual. Not everyone was able to find a new use for an item, and some people actual made a career out of collecting metal scraps to be repaired and sold.

There had been times in history when recycling has been further developed to serve a particular purpose when items have not been as accessible as they had been before. A perfect example of a time where recycling was important in the past would be during the Second World War. Many items were not available because so much focus was on the war effort, and items needed to last as long as possible because of the fact that a replacement would not be as readily available to the individual. Metals were needed to create weapons and vehicles along with rubber and nylon, so products that used these materials were not produced as readily because they were considered luxury items. The environmental movement itself was not established until the 1960s and 70s, and the first Earth Day, recycling’s “holiday” happened in 1970.

Recycling today is still an important topic, even if as a people, we are not forced to recycle due to a lack of goods or money. There is a fall of goods that are produced that are used for a time, and then thrown away for the next new thing. An excellent example for this is mobile phones. Once a person has finished their contract or is ready to move on to the newest generation mobile, they discard their last one and all the accessories that was used for that particular model. There are companies out there that do recycle cell phones and other electronics by either deleting previous information and reselling the mobiles, donating them to those in need, such as soldiers, or recycling unwanted phones in an environmentally friendly way. Today, there is more awareness of the importance of recycling beyond just being frugal, but there is still room for improvement. More people need to recycle everything that they can to keep it from the landfill, and more options need to be created to recycle materials that seem to have no future purpose.

In conclusion, recycling may appear to be a very recent concept that allows for people to reduce the amount of waste that they throw away, but it is actually something that has existed for a lot longer. In the past, people may not have been able to replace items due to the scarcity of money or the item itself, so it made sense to ensure that the item would last for as long as possible by repairing it or using it for another purpose. Today, there is a spare of most goods as they are being mass produced, and many are not made of good quality materials that allow for it to be easily repaired. Many times, the product is cheaper to replace than repair. Recycling items by finding a purpose for the items to keep it from the landfill is essential to keep the planet from being overloaded from the amount of garbage that is being produced today.

Personal reflective #2

In the English and writing course I learned a lot of subject. In the first of days of the semester I learned how to summarize articles and I have done two. The first one was preservation Emirati traditions and Houbara bustards.

We get quick and special steps to start a good summarizing that we have to follow beginning with reading the entire article next write the main idea for each paragraph after that organize the main ideas and summarize the article in our own words. After that the teacher gave us a website to put the sources on it which is called bibme.com and the teacher explains for us two ways to get the URL and use it in the website, first one is to write the title of the article or to write the first sentence of the article in any searching websites like googel.com then we have to copy the URL and put on bibme.com and full up the information like author name and create date and other things. also we learnt how to make in-line citations .the second subject that we have to write an  essay and it’s quite harder than summarize to me but as a first subject the teacher gave us a useful way to write an essay and the most important thing is the outline  to build up your essay then you have to organize the ideas next search for information that will help me and support my essay and write it in my own words  I did two essays the first one   was about Recycling  and other one about Story Of Stuff, What's more we did online vocabulary quizzes in our blackboard  learn. The whole thing that I learnt in this class is important for me because writhing essays or reports is necessary in college or in jobs so I’m really happy that I took this class.

I actually enjoyed on this class and I think it is supportive to me until I graduated from the collage and Mr. Gregory was very helpful he explains everything even small details we need and he treat us as his friends and build a strong relationship with students and he was not stingy on us by giving us a lot of information that help us to develop in writing.

Moreover, Mr. Vrhovnik teaches us how to search information in many webs – sites such as google site and how to choose the convenience subject. Also, quoting and getting points from the site which is given by the teacher. The most important thing is to write summaries and researches in certain procedure and give it back to the teacher. In this course, my English language is improving day after day. And I hope I will learn better in the next Reading and Writing course.finally I suggest to the students to attend this course because you will gain a lot of skills and information especially with Mr Gregory Vrhovnic.
